Dear Champs
A long overdue note from your Social Events team

Champs Summer Picnic: Saturday 23rd June 2012

We are planning to hold a ‘Champs Summer Picnic’ across the river from the Clare Boat House.
Firstly as a social event but also planning to incorporate Boat naming for various new boats and also as a gathering to remember the lovely Helen P and hopefully admire the new Champs flag.

Bumps Week: Tuesday 17th to Friday 20th July 2012

Hog Roast booked for evening of Wednesday 18th July 2012
Football Club and food booked for last night of the Bumps – 20th July 2012

Champs Annual Dinner Dance: Saturday 10th November 2012

Everyone seemed so positive about last year’s format that I have booked the Cass Centre again. There will be live music, a bar, good food and of course excellent company.

Obituary: Helen Patterson 5/6/1962-18/04/2012

Helen PattersonLast week Helen Patterson died following a year long battle with a rare sarcoma. She leaves Paul and five children.

She was a Prostate Cancer Oncology specialist in Cambridge. I was privileged to know her as a colleague and as a crew mate.

Helen believed passionately in empowering women through sport. She was a well known rower in both Cambridge and Oxford and an accomplished runner. Even as her disease progressed, she completed a half marathon for prostate cancer last October and was still running in January. Continue reading “Obituary: Helen Patterson 5/6/1962-18/04/2012”

Cold weather and your safety

The Arctic blast has finally arrived this winter with a vengeance.

Please don’t get caught out on the river unprepared.

Be sensible about your outings. The flag may be green, but conditions — particularly in the evenings — may be deteriorating due to wind, temperature or precipitation. In those cases, make the right decisions about the safety of your crew and the care of our equipment.

Dress appropriately for the cold weather. Have several layers to take on and off as you warm up and cool down. Make sure they include a hat, warm gloves, thick socks and a water and wind resistant outer layer to keep you dry and warm. Take all the layers with you in the boat.

Take precautionary measures such as having a bank party (particularly for all evening outings), have a mobile phone in the boat for emergencies and ensure that your cox is up to speed on directions to the various access points on the river.

SINGLE AND DOUBLE SCULLERS WITHOUT BANK PARTIES: PLEASE MAKE ANOTHER PERSON AWARE OF YOUR OUTING PLANS IN CASE OF EMERGENCY. DO NOT GO OUT IN HOURS OF DARKNESS WITHOUT A BANK PARTY.

Thank you for your patience and enjoy some safe and brrrrrrrrrr chilly rowing.

Bests,

Paul
